The Boy Who Lost His Face

When I first saw this book, I thought, Great! Another Louis Sachar book! His books are usually quirky and fun to read! Notice I said, USUALLY. I was very disappointed in this book. While it still had the same writing style, and the book storyline was fairly decent, there was SO MUCH LANGUAGE in this book I thought I would just gag. HELLO! It's written for 10 year olds and under! They don't need any help in the swearing department!

Aside from that there was a bizarre moral in the book which somehow included flipping people off. It is unfortunate really, because the main storyline in the book was a really good one. It could have been an amazing book. The main storyline is about a boy whose best friend decides he isn't "cool enough" anymore. It goes over being bullied not just by kids who were bullies, but his former best friend.

The main character, David, has a big decision to make. At first he tries to hang out with his former best friend anyway, and even goes along with some of the really stupid and mean things that kids can be known to do. He then realizes that that is not what he wants to do, and he finds new friends. THAT is what I liked about this book. The portrayal of the difficulties of middle school and finding new friends when you realize that your current friends are going in a direction that you don't want to go.

I don't think I will be keeping this book. I can't even say that I would recommend it to anyone. I give it 2 pens. If you want a good book to read by Louis Sachar read "Holes" or "There's A Boy in the Girl's Bathroom."
